EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
