Social Media Content Creators Driving Parallel Trade for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow economy for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Concerns

Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.

Several experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

Service Response and Material Elimination

Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down violative material and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to keeping the service safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Research also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with thousands of users, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed guides for mixing or injecting at residence.

After moments of joining one group, a vendor shared contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these communities, posts show black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“People are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may subject users to possibly significant health risks”.
